The life we live is often a challenge that never ends. It is in those challenges that we must remember where the source of our strength comes from. As believers, that strength comes from God who reveals His power and glory from then until now. That is the essence of God's existence that continues to be witnessed by various believers throughout the ages.
In chapter 48, the psalmist describes God in His dwelling place. Consecrated mountains and cities have long been used in the ancient Middle Eastern world as places where God dwells, rules, and reigns over the universe. This time, it is Zion that is described as His dwelling place. Glory, salvation, and joy envelop Zion. All these attributes can arise because God Himself truly dwells in Zion. God is the stronghold or guardian of the city. Glory surrounds the city not because of the place itself, but because God is there.
The essence of the psalmist's praise in chapter 48 ultimately testifies to the glory, salvation, and triumph that comes in the Lord. So the main character in the psalmist's praise is not the city but God who is behind all the glory that is present there. The poem is ultimately about "showing off" and remembering God's marvelous steadfast love. Thus people throughout the ages come to understand that God is the only leader of mankind for all eternity.
Bible friends, let us praise God for His goodness and steadfast love. Whatever happens, let us thank and praise Him, that is the source of our strength in the midst of all the struggles that occur. Live in His love always, then we will see how good God is to us.
