Imagining God's love, inclusion, and promises is something far beyond the realm of human reason. Thankfully, God reaches out to His people and reveals Himself in ways that make it possible for humans to understand Him. In this reading, God uses an image that is very familiar to humans, namely a description of a city. In the history of human civilization, cities have been a significant feature of people. It can be a very personal and meaningful marker, such as when someone remembers the place where they were born and raised. God introduces himself as dwelling in Zion and from there emanates all the goodness of God.
The Psalmist describes the importance of Zion in the lives of God's people. The city was built by God himself and loves Zion even more than Jacob's home (Bethel/Samaria). Many interpreters identify the city with Jerusalem because it is where the temple is located. However, many interpreters choose to translate Zion as an idealized picture of a place, existence, and people led by God Himself. God's values and statutes are perfectly upheld in Zion. Naturally, Zion became a place that was unrivaled even compared to the great cities/countries at that time, namely Rahab (another name for Egypt), Babylon, Philistea, Tyre, and Ethiopia. All the greatness of these cities was born from Zion.
God calls all those who submit and trust in Him to dwell in Zion. To live in God's ways and receive His blessings. The psalmist describes this by adding that "they are born there." Zion is a symbol of a life devoted to the worship of God, as well as a sign of the presence of God who wants to dwell with his people.
Today's scripture ultimately reminds us how happy it is when we live a life that pleases Him and becomes a place for Him to dwell. Thus we must have the realization that this life belongs to God and must be dedicated entirely to Him. May God help us to realize a life that is in accordance with His word.
