The psalmists often express total confidence in God. No matter what happens and no matter how hard the struggle, God is always present to provide help. The form of God's help may vary and depend on each situation, but ultimately God is our only source of help. Unfortunately, we often falter. Relying on various “powers” that we think can be an alternative source of help.
In the current reading the psalmist again juxtaposes the power of God with gods. The conclusion is clear that these gods are incomparable to God. In the past each nation was represented by the gods they worshipped. So the recognition of God as the only authority automatically places the nations in the worship of the Lord (v.9). The psalmist reveals the reason for this total worship of God is because God performs wonders and His work never ceases upon the universe. Therefore, God's people should not need to look to these gods. But in fact, believers are often tempted by other powers or gods. Look at the phenomenon today, when believers rely more on their intellect, power, honor, and wealth to solve their struggles. God does not get his rightful place.
If God's help and sovereignty is the ultimate necessity in the universe, then believers are invited to give thanks and worship God at all times. We are invited to glorify His name forever and ever (v. 12). God's great mercy has been poured out for us. It is only fitting that the people respond with gratitude. Have we responded appropriately to His love? Lest we still be preoccupied with our doubts wondering if God will really help us. Rest assured that God is our only source of help.
