Many theories categorize and highlight the characteristics of a good leader. The Bible also has characteristics of a good leader. Those who are recognized as good leaders are first seen through their closeness to God and how obedient they are to His commands. Then prayer is offered to God that the leader of the nation will truly submit himself before God and put His command above all else.
Our reading this time reflects a prayer or hope for the leader/king. Hope is expressed in such a way, this time not from the mouth of the people but from God Himself. The King is portrayed as one who is overwhelmed by His righteousness and steadfast love. The king is even described as having great power over the sea and the rivers. This is only because of God's provision. The relationship between the two is so close. God is called as his Father, the source of his protection and help. Then God will elevate him as the highest of the kings of the earth.
Furthermore, God declared that His presence and protection would last forever, the king's throne was guarded by Him. All this could be promised as long as the king's descendants (dynasty) kept the covenant with God. They remained firm in God's decree. So do not try to turn away from God's decree for once because in the end God himself will bring punishment.
Through today's word we see that a leader will be recognized for their prowess when they hold fast to God's word and statutes. They are entrusted with public office and look after the interests of many people. The power gained is very close to the temptation to misuse it. Therefore, leaders must always hold fast to the fixed and unchanging line of truth bequeathed by Him. This is reflected in His words. If God has entrusted us with certain offices, powers, and leadership positions, have we held fast to His decree? Remember that whatever we have is from God alone.
