When we are in the midst of great struggles and difficulties, it seems we have a tendency to look at those who seem to be in a better condition. In these situations, we often become shaken. Especially when coupled with encounters with cynical words from others who question our trust in God. However, a believer is invited to understand that no matter what happens, God never loses His attention from us. He is the living God who is always present and working in the midst of life.
The above struggle is also evident in our reading. In the nuances of their defeat of the Babylonians that led to the exile, there was a collective sense of inferiority that permeated the Israelites. If they were defeated, did that mean God was defeated too? At least the insinuation of God's powerlessness was felt from the other nations around them (v. 2). The psalmist emphatically answers this accusation. The God of Israel is the living, sovereign and powerful God, whereas all the gods of the other nations are only dead idols. Those who rely on such gods will also perish.
After that the psalmist invites the people to trust in God always. It is a necessity for God's people to trust in the Lord always. He is our source of life and help. Those who trust in the Lord will live forever, with God into eternity.
In the midst of severe struggles that hit life let us continue to hope in Him. Only God is the source of our help. Even though sometimes things have not moved or changed in the direction we want, do not doubt because God is a living God who is able to change everything. As believers, all we need to do is to keep getting closer to Him through obedience and worship to Him.
