Every human being is constantly involved in living with others. It is a necessity in our lives. However, sometimes the implementation of life together is actually colored by various conflicts or disagreements that are not managed properly. As a result, we no longer feel God's blessings in the community. The environment of life together, be it in the family, home environment, office, even church becomes a site that no longer brings joy.
The Psalmist invites us to live life together in the bond of love and harmony with others. In order for this to be realized, the first thing to strive for is unity as something good and beautiful. The occurrence of the words "good" and "beautiful" are quite interesting to note. Both are not just abstract adjectives but a form of action that is real and felt in everyday life. The depiction of this condition is explained with two images. The first image is associated with oil. In Jewish culture, oil is an important element in a feast. Oil symbolizes joy. However, the oil used here is not just ordinary oil but oil that is “good ” and precious. The reference to the oil is most likely the special oil for priests. Such is the preciousness of togetherness.
The second image relates to dew. A metaphor is used of the dew of Mount Hermon coming down on Mount Zion. Not literally, of course, but referring to the source of water that continues to give life from there. It is the source of water for the Jordan River. This illustrates how harmony and togetherness in the community become a source that enlivens and excites. Isn't that what we often experience in our daily lives? A community torn apart by unresolved conflicts often turns into a very uncomfortable place, while a life together lived in harmony seems to make us always long to return there. So strive for unity and harmony in the common life we have in all spheres. Humble yourself and make room for others in love.
