Surviving Being Righteous

Being righteous and honest is often not easy in this country. Often we are forced into schemes of dishonesty just to survive in various spheres of life. Those who refuse to bow down to unrighteousness and keep their conscience, must feel uneasy about the situation. But there is no denying that it is often so difficult and circumstances force us to turn away from His decrees. Can we endure to stay on His path and hold fast to His truth.

That is also the psalmist's concern in our reading this time. The psalmist earnestly pleads with God to hear him, “give ear when I cry to you!” It's a request that expresses the psalmist's deepest need. What is the psalmist really asking for? He is asking God to keep him in line with what is right in his words and actions. The fragile human heart is often a breeding ground for evil, so the psalmist asks God to watch over his heart (v. 4)

The psalmist earnestly hoped that he would not fall into ungodliness. He was so worried about falling into wickedness and doing wicked deeds with the wicked. Although the life of the wicked may be comfortable and full of “good food”, the psalmist does not wish to partake in that unrighteousness. This is a principle that he wants to teach believers throughout the ages. He truly hopes that the wicked will be rewarded. On the other hand, the psalmist wants his entire life and outlook to be focused on God alone. God's protection and provision is what he expects in life. Trials may come one after another but only God can strengthen his heart.

Friends of the Bible, let us endure and strive to always do what is right for Him. God wants us to live in the truth of His word, even if that choice is laughed at by those who choose to live in ungodliness and wickedness. It is certainly not an easy thing, but we can imitate the psalmist to ask God alone for strength and protection. It is only in the Lord that we find strength and help.
