A teacher who has been teaching for many years often only realizes the impact of her work long after the process has been undertaken. He may not always see the results immediately: some students are slow to understand, some fail, some leave without saying goodbye. But at some point, a student comes back and says that the patience, discipline, and trust he or she received in the past has shaped the course of his or her life. A process undertaken with diligence and faithfulness has borne fruit in the lives of others.
Psalm 144:8-15 moves in a similar pattern. After the beginning of the psalm recounts personal struggle and formation, verses 9 & 11 feature praise: the psalmist promises to sing "a new song" to God who gives victory to the king and delivers David, his servant. "A new song" is not simply an outpouring of emotion, but a confession of faith rooted in the old story, an echo of Psalm 18, of a faithful God who helps. The psalmist is not looking for new words, for the "old and tested" has the power to sustain faith in the midst of changing circumstances.
The tone of the psalm changes sharply in verses 12 & 14. The singular voice of the king shifts to the voice of the community. The focus of faith shifts from personal liberation to communal life, growing children, strong families, and preserved lives. This image is reminiscent of the formulation of blessing in Deuteronomy 28, that the impact of a right relationship with God results in shalom/peace for others. Thus, true faith in God does not only speak of one's own salvation, but grows into concern for others.
Friends of the Bible, through the example of believers throughout the ages, we see that faith never grows from an instant process. It is a long journey for a person to form his or her faith in God. Thus a person can stand firm in the face of all the obstacles life presents, even making his life impactful for others. Beware of the temptations and patterns of modern life that always want convenience and fast processes. Be ready to be molded by God and be a blessing to others.
