Process as a Language of Love

An athlete is not automatically born a champion. Behind the triumphant moments we see on screen, there are years of unseen training: endlessly repeated moves, injuries that force quitting, defeats that foster doubt, and the temptation to give up. In the world of sports, the process is often longer and harder than the result. But that's where an athlete's character, discipline and inner resilience are formed, long before a medal is hung around his or her neck.

Psalm 144:1–7 reflects a faith that grows in awareness of the importance of process. The psalmist praises the LORD as the One who "teaches my hands to fight, and my fingers to war." This phrase clearly displays the iterative and shaping nature of learning. This psalm resonates strongly with Psalm 18, which is rooted in David's life experiences, flight, warfare, and real threats. David's prowess was not merely "inborn", but the fruit of God's hand working through his life history, through long and hard training.

The realization deepens in verses 3-4, when the psalmist reflects on the fragility of man: like the wind that blows and the shadows that pass by. It is this awareness of limitations that is the foundation of his growth. An athlete who denies his limitations will be easily crushed by failure, whereas if he recognizes them, he will learn to adapt, grow, and survive. The psalmist did not hide the threats he faced, but pleaded for God's hand to come down and sustain his fragile life in the midst of chaos.

Friends of the Bible, this process of life that we sometimes consider uncertain, is the language of God's love. God does not mold people through instant victory, but through faithful practice. When failure comes and the soul feels like giving up, remember that God is present in silence, weaving inner resilience and deepening our faith. Like athletes who finally reap the rewards of their long training, we too should not be weary of continuing to process in the midst of the dynamics of this life. In the midst of the demands of daily life, economic uncertainty, and social anxiety that we experience, we are called to remain faithful and persevere. That faithfulness comes in simple steps: working honestly, maintaining hope, and continuing to walk with God, because the hand that trains us today is the hand that faithfully leads us forward.
