Often when things happen we can never quite guess why they come into our lives. Whether it is the events that feel so thrilling and exciting, or the tragedies or sadness that occur in life. But usually the question of why something has to happen in life, is more commonly heard when sadness and tragedy occur in life. When something out of our imaginations and expectations just happens.

Preacher attempts to answer that eternal question with honesty. He begins his reflection by saying, "For everything there is a season, and for everything under heaven there is a time (v. 3)." Then he describes the various events that occur in life. Two events that have opposite spectrums, but still occur in the world. There is a time to be born and a time to die. There is a time to cry and a time to laugh. There is a time to mourn and a time to dance. Everything has its own time and season to be present in the world. The problem is that we often only want one kind of time/season: something that brings ease, comfort, and pleasure. We associate God's presence only with those things.

But God is in every event, moment, and time. Whether we are laughing or crying, God is still present in our lives. It is the sovereignty of God that makes us fear Him. No one can fathom the work of God and everything that God does from beginning to end. We can only cling to the promise of His provision that, "He makes everything beautiful in its time" (v. 11).

In the end, based on the preacher's reflection, tragedy happens in our lives because it is meant to happen. Just as happiness and laughter will also happen, if it is in its time. Regarding times, seasons and times are entirely in the sovereignty of God which we cannot digest how He works. However, humans can feel relief because God promises to bring beauty at the right time. That is the basis for our hope and life.
