Sow Truth, Reap Peace

Recently, more and more people have been seeking ways to find peace of mind. Some take time out to go on holiday, take a break from social media, attend personal development classes, or begin studying Stoic philosophy, which often speaks of inner peace amidst life’s various upheavals. This phenomenon shows that, in an increasingly fast-paced and stressful world, the longing for a peaceful life has become a necessity for many people. However, behind this search lies a more fundamental question: is peace of mind merely a matter of managing one’s thoughts and emotions, or is there something deeper that needs to be addressed?

Isaiah 32 invites us to view tranquillity from a different perspective. This chapter begins with a description of a king who rules justly and leaders who carry out their duties correctly. Amidst a nation experiencing moral and social turmoil, Isaiah offers hope in God’s work of restoring life. When the Spirit of God is poured out, the wilderness becomes fertile, justice is upheld, and truth regains its rightful place in society. It is in this context that Isaiah declares, “Where righteousness is established, there is peace; and the fruit of righteousness is tranquillity and security for ever.” (v. 17).

These words show that tranquillity is not something that arises of its own accord. It is the fruit of a life built upon righteousness. Truth here is not merely knowing what is right and what is wrong, but living in harmony with God’s will and embodying it in just relationships with one’s neighbours. Therefore, true peace does not arise from efforts to avoid problems, suppress conflict, or maintain comfort at all costs. True peace grows when life is restored and reordered by truth.

Dear Friends of the Bible, we are often more preoccupied with pursuing peace of mind than with laying the foundations of life that give rise to it. We desire a peaceful heart, yet are reluctant to live in honesty. We long for harmonious relationships, yet are reluctant to fight for justice and truth. God’s Word today reminds us that peace cannot be reaped without first sowing truth. Therefore, let us learn to be faithful in doing what is right in every decision, word and deed. For when truth is sown in our lives, God will bring forth peace and tranquillity that do not depend on circumstances, but are rooted in His restorative presence.
