The Fruits of Compassion: A Life Restored

When fear becomes part of everyday life, people gradually learn to cope in the safest way possible: by not caring too much, not getting too involved, and not getting too close to the suffering of others. We call it caution, but often it is simply another form of exhaustion from caring.

Yet Isaiah 33 does not stop at such a reality. After speaking of a world full of pressure, injustice and uncertainty, this text opens up a different vision: that of a restored life. A world where a sense of security is no longer a rarity, and life is no longer shaped by threats, but by the peace that God brings. Eyes that have hitherto seen only threats and danger will behold the King in His splendour. A city that was once fragile and under threat becomes a place of safety and peace. Zion is depicted as a place of abundance, where the Lord Himself is the judge, king and saviour of His people.

In this light, the “fruit of compassion” becomes ever clearer. For true compassion not only transforms our relationships with one another, but also breaks down the walls of fear that drive people apart. Compassion is the courage to remain present in the midst of a world that pushes us apart. And from that courage, God presents a vision of a restored life—a life no longer controlled by fear.

Dear Friends of the Bible, the restored world in Isaiah’s vision is not merely a promise of the future, but also an invitation to live differently today. Whilst many choose to keep their distance for fear of being hurt, God calls us to remain present and caring. For often, restoration does not begin with grand changes, but with a heart that remains sensitive to others. Ultimately, the question is not merely whether we long for a more peaceful world, but whether we are willing to be part of the peace that God is working in the midst of this world.
