God Is Not Indifferent

Recently, the media has reported on student protests under the slogan “Indonesia is bankrupt.”” Through the various demands they have voiced, these protests reflect the anxiety felt by some members of the public regarding the state of the nation, ranging from economic issues and governance to the future of our shared way of life. Regardless of whether one agrees with the demands put forward, these protests highlight one important point: when so many things are perceived to be amiss, people will ask, “Does anyone really care?”

Such questions are, in fact, not unique to the Indonesian people. Isaiah 34 emerged from a world also rife with injustice, violence and the abuse of power. This chapter begins with a call to the nations to heed God’s judgement. The imagery used is indeed harsh and terrifying. The heavens are rolled up, the earth turns to brimstone, and the nations face destruction. Yet behind this dramatic language, Isaiah is conveying a message that God does not turn a blind eye to evil.

In this chapter, Edom appears as a symbol of all the powers that build their glory upon the suffering of others. It represents arrogance, violence and oppression that seem untouchable by either the law or human authority. Yet Isaiah emphasises that no power is immune to God’s judgement. Sooner or later, every form of injustice will face Him who is the Judge of the whole earth.

Isaiah’s message remains relevant to us today. Faced with various forms of injustice that continue to arise from time to time, we may feel weary, even gradually losing faith that things can get better. Yet Isaiah reminds us that God does not turn a blind eye to the world’s wounds. He sees every form of oppression, hears every ignored cry, and does not remain silent in the face of injustice. God’s wrath in this chapter is not an uncontrolled outburst of emotion, but an expression of His love for righteousness and His solidarity with the oppressed. Therefore, the Christian faith does not call us to succumb to despair, but rather to maintain hope and compassion. For change often does not begin with grand gestures, but with a heart that remains sensitive to truth, justice, and the suffering of others.
