Human beings are often caught in a paradox. On the one hand, we are recognised as rational beings capable of contemplating complex matters; yet, on the other hand, we are all too easily led astray by the same temptations and fall into sin once more. This is precisely what happened to the people of Judah; they repeated the fatal mistakes committed by their forefathers. 

Our passage today opens with a historical flashback narrated directly by the Lord. God reminds Judah of the covenant He had made with their forefathers long ago. The Lord says, “Listen to My voice and do everything I command you, and you shall be My people and I will be your God.”  This covenant has never changed, but it is the human party to this covenant that continues to change. Meanwhile, God remains faithful to the covenant. 

Therefore, God deeply regretted Judah’s behaviour in turning away from Him; they committed the same sins as their forefathers of old. It is truly regrettable that this has come to pass. Consequently, God must ultimately bring about similar judgement and justice. His wrath has reached its peak, and Judah must bear the full brunt of it. 

Dear Friends of the Bible, let us live our lives with vigilance and self-awareness. Be wary of the temptations and trials that constantly lead us down paths not willed by Him. However, we must realise that all this is not based on our own strength at all, but solely on God’s help. Do not worry, for the Lord will certainly always be with us. He is a God who remains steadfast and faithful to the covenant He has declared.
