The knowledge of God is a continuation of the relationship between God and humankind. Through the Old Testament, we see that God is a God who desires to establish a relationship with His creation. Humanity has often broken that covenant and turned away from God. Sin has caused them to rebel against God and to be reluctant to obey His commandments, viewing them as a burden. 

This is where the Torah actually becomes crucial. It sets boundaries for humankind. Unfortunately, however, God continues to witness transgressions by His people. Humankind returns to the old pattern of rebellion that has long existed. Perhaps what is required is a radical effort to shift our paradigm in order to follow Him. To know Him with complete sincerity. 

It is here that God then speaks of the inner self and the heart, in which His laws and decrees are engraved. This signifies the internalisation of His commandments. From this comes a true knowledge of the Lord. To know is not merely to be acquainted, but to know deeply. It is not just the outer aspect, but deep into the very depths of the Lord’s heart. It is through this deep knowledge that the Word of the Lord will truly come alive and be sealed within His people. This is what the prophet Jeremiah meant when he said that the Lord declared: ‘I will place My Law within their innermost being and write it upon their hearts.’ 

That is what should form the foundation of our spirituality. Our spirituality is based on grace, not on laws and rules; therefore, a deep knowledge of God and His will is essential. We pray, worship and obey His word not because we fear we will not be saved, but because we realise that the foundation of our very existence lies in a deep relationship with God. Thus, naturally, all our thoughts, words and deeds align with His will.
