The state of the world we live in today often gives rise to a sense of unease. Will we be able to weather the various crises that are shaking the very foundations of our existence? War, natural disasters, environmental degradation, economic instability and political uncertainty are all factors that fuel this anxiety, allowing it to take root and linger in our minds. Will we be able to endure all of this? Where can we turn for support as the storms of life come one after another?
Jeremiah 47 once again depicts the collapse of a great power that seemed unshakeable. This time, the account concerns the fate of the Philistines. They were a seafaring people who lived along the coast of western Palestine. As we read through the Old Testament, we are reminded of the Philistines, who were always a threat to Israel. This nation has long been a scourge to Israel. Yet this fearsome nation, by the power of God, will be destroyed by Egypt. The Lord will punish this nation without exception.
Interestingly, amidst all the depictions of violence and despair befalling the Philistines, there is a cry for help directed to God. As recorded in verse 6, “Ah, sword of the LORD, how long before you cease? Return to your sheath, be still and rest!” What is the meaning of this cry? It may well be that this cry reflects the realisation of all humanity that, ultimately, if God raises His sword against a nation, it is only His will that can cause Him to “sheathe His sword”. God describes Himself as the sole source of unrivalled strength and power.
Indeed, the Philistines were subdued so that believers might know that God is the source of true righteousness. The great obstacle that constantly loomed over Israel was defeated by God in the blink of an eye. Therefore, amidst all the uncertainties of life and the various events that cause us to lose hope, let us look to the Lord in all His love and according to His will. God is reflected in every form of relationship that brings love and peace. God indeed has many ways of manifesting justice in the world, but the righteous remain under His protection. Let us always place our hope in God. Only through Him can we find true peace.
