Seeing His Will in All Things

Coming to terms with the events that come and go in our lives is no easy task. This is especially true when they involve unpleasant matters that weigh heavily on our hearts. It feels so heavy when God calls His people to reflect on what they have experienced. Yet that is what we must do to the best of our ability: to live through the various events God brings into our lives, whilst reflecting on the meaning behind them all.

Throughout its history, Judah faced events that turned their lives upside down. Jerusalem was laid waste by the Babylonian army. Some of its inhabitants were exiled to Babylon. Jeremiah prophesied all this long before it happened. He conveyed God’s message with the utmost truthfulness. God said, “A lion has come out of the thicket; the destroyer of the nations has set out, leaving his lair to lay your land waste (v. 7).” Weeping and lamentation immediately followed these events. God’s people felt such profound suffering. It was as though the Lord had forsaken them and enveloped Jerusalem in His wrath.

What could the people do in the midst of such a terrifying situation? God proclaimed a call to repentance for His people. Cleanse your hearts of wickedness and abandon all evil plans.  For ultimately, it was the people’s own actions that had caused all this to happen. The punishment is so bitter that it pierces the heart (v. 18). However dire the coming events may be, through Jeremiah’s prophecy, God is actually giving His people an opportunity to repent sincerely. Unfortunately, that invitation was not properly heeded or reflected upon.

Dear Friends of the Bible, God has many ways of reaching out to and teaching His people. Even the most unpleasant events are used by God to convey His teachings. We must simply always humble ourselves and make ourselves available to listen to Him. That is our challenge as people of faith. Are we willing to respond to every event with a clear heart, fully focused on God? Let us not be like Judah, who was too late to respond to God’s call to repentance. After all, He sent His prophet quite clearly to proclaim this message so that the people might respond immediately.
