It seems that all too often we hear sermons or read devotionals that invite us to diligently read God's word and obey it in our daily lives. To the point that we are tempted to feel that the message is just a formality. Actually, the message is often repeated on various occasions, because of the realization that it feels very difficult to obey God's commandments. So how can we live obediently and according to His word?"
Our reading this time is classified as a psalm of wisdom. The center of wisdom of the believer is God and His commandments. Therefore, the Torah is praised as God's most precious gift, hence the psalmist wants to encourage people to live according to the teachings of the Torah. God's commandments bring understanding. Rather than just a command, the commandments instruct and educate the people to live righteously.
The Hebrew word Torah, translated as Torah, was originally used for the instructions for life given by a mother or authoritative parent to her young child or inexperienced youth. A person who knows the torah can be considered wise, knows the customs, is able to carry himself well in society and through his advice others walk on the right path. So the virtue of life for a believer is always related to his seriousness to obey God's word in life. It is this realization that first needs to be built so that we labor in the struggle to truly live in His word. Sometimes we fall into neglecting His word because we lack the ability to connect God's word with the reality of our daily lives.
Friends of the Bible, let us truly live out His word in our daily lives. God's word changes our mindset, words, and actions so that they are more in line with His will. From there, true wisdom of life is born. Living His word is not an instant process, so it takes determination to walk in it. Thus, God's word will always be something relevant for us to live by.
