The sovereignty of God the Creator of the Universe transcends all that exists. He shows His work continuously. Nothing escapes His attention. Including the tragedies, wounds, and fragility that become the daily reality of humanity. But sometimes, when we directly experience these struggles, it feels so hard. Loneliness and solitude seem to be friends in the face of suffering.
That faith is what the psalmist expresses in our reading. He cries out to God. His cry of anguish is heart-wrenching. He is on the brink of destruction. Will God move and help? He rhetorically expresses his conviction in verses 11-13. It is impossible for God to be silent about the suffering of the living. Only the living can praise God and glorify Him. The psalmist's statement is based on the ancient Israelite idea that the world of the dead is a desolate place without the possibility of a relationship with Him. In other words, the psalmist begged God to preserve his life so that God's faithfulness and love would be proclaimed.
Based on this belief, he continued to declare his faith with perseverance. Every morning he prayed to God. A faithfulness that does not depend on circumstances or feelings. This is a mature faith, in good times and bad, in pain and suffering, God is still glorified.
May we also be enabled to continue to depend on and surrender to God. When life is hit by heavy struggles and there seems to be no hope, rest assured that God always guides and hears our prayers. Let's learn to have a mature faith. When life is good we worship Him and when struggles and problems come, we still worship Him.
