We live in an age when the line between right and wrong is increasingly blurred. Recently, a mass media outlet highlighted the post-truth phenomenon, where emotions and personal opinions determine public perception more than facts. Right and wrong are no longer weighed based on objective truth, but rather on how strongly a narrative goes viral and is accepted by many. In such situations, people seem to walk in the dark: trying to interpret life based on momentary intuition or following the flow of the most crowded opinions, but losing their true inner orientation.
Amidst such circumstances, the psalmist's voice emerges like a light through the fog: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). The psalmist affirms that God's word is the light that guides man's steps, just as David once testified, "You are my lamp, O Lord, and the Lord shines in my darkness" (2 Samuel 22:29). Through the meditation of God's word, man is led to discern the voice of God from the voice of his own desires, and is placed in the chain of faith of believers across generations, a living tradition that guides, not shackles.
Next, in verses 113 & 120, the psalmist shows how the word works in real life: he rejects a wavering heart, refusing to live between light and darkness, between God's will and moral compromise. Yet he did not fall into spiritual pride either. He stood before God and trembled, aware that God is both Friend and Judge. That realization purified his steps and preserved his integrity. He witnessed that true faith is born when people dare to be fully present before God, not dissolve in the flow of mass opinion. The Word became a lamp for his steep and rocky steps.
Friends of the Bible, today's devotional invites us to honestly ask, "Are we truly walking in the light of His word, or are we secretly guided by human desires and the pressures of the times?" In the midst of all the voices competing to establish themselves as the truth, we need to calm our hearts and focus on the true truth that comes from His word. It is the truth that guides believers throughout the ages.
