God Keeps Me

One night, a little boy woke up from a nightmare. With teary eyes, he called out to his mother. She came, sat on the edge of the bed, and said quietly, "Mommy's here." There was no long explanation, no promise that the nightmares would never come again. But that presence is enough. Slowly the child's breathing became regular, and he fell back asleep. A sense of security is born because someone is watching. This simple illustration helps us understand the message of Psalm 121, which is about true serenity born not because life is risk-free, but because God watches.

Psalm 121 is the second of a series of Pilgrim Hymns, sung by pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem. The journey was long and uncertain. Along the way, the psalmist lifted his eyes to the mountains, places that in the ancient world were often associated with gods. Then he asks, as if speaking to himself, "Where will my help come from?" The answer is unequivocal: my help comes from the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. In other words, security does not come from high places or natural forces, but from the God who created and sustains everything.

After the confession of faith, came a second voice, a voice of affirmation. God would not let the pilgrim's feet falter. He neither slumbers nor sleeps. The cryptic word, “keep,” repeated six times in this psalm, signifies the heart of the message. God's watchfulness is not passive. He is not a careless watchman, but a God who actively watches, protects and prevents harm. In the midst of a world that often acts indifferent, this psalm affirms that God is always watching.

The image of God as “shade” deepens the meaning of that watchfulness. Like the shadows that protect from the scorching sun, God shades His people day and night. There is no time when we are beyond His reach. Even in "your in and out", the whole rhythm of life is within the scope of God's care. From now until eternity, our lives are in His care.

Friends of the Bible, Psalm 121 invites us to learn to trust. We may admit our anxieties and limitations, but we are not left alone. In the midst of a life that is not always safe, we can walk with a calm heart while saying a simple, yet encouraging confession of faith: The Lord watches over me.
