Human beings are creatures that have advantages in terms of their intellect to process facts, experiences, and memories into information that drives their lives. Memories, in particular, can inspire a desire to be grateful and continue living a better life, or bring endless bitterness and disappointment. So it is important to nurture good memories of something that excites life. This also applies to how we remember God's works in our lives. Has He not brought all goodness into our lives? Beauty is created through a series of His works.
Psalm 136:1-9 is a poem that reveals the power of God in transforming chaos and disorder into order so that life is possible on earth. In it, the psalmist seems to testify that God alone can do many miraculous works in the world. Amazing works that would not have been possible if it were not for God's power. As expressed in verse 4 which serves as an initial affirmation that everything that happens within the scope of His works are miracles alone.
In succession, the process of the creation of the universe is described. This sequence follows the pattern of creation in Genesis.
Starting from the heavens, the earth, and the sun and moon that give stability and order to the whole creation (vv. 7-9). Interestingly, verse 5 adds the explanation that the creation of the heavens and God's creative process involves His wisdom to show God's governance of the universe directed towards goodness alone. The world was created in His miracle, directed towards the order of all the elements of the universe, and aimed to bring goodness to all creation. This poem is like a testimony to all of God's works that have taken place to uphold His eternal covenant. Therefore, the entire statement of God's actions ends with the phrase, "surely His steadfast love endures forever." Doesn't that exclamation still represent the reality today that God's steadfast love endures forever?
Friends of the Bible, isn't the psalmist's exclamation that indeed His steadfast love endures forever, a living testimony that is still relevant today. Nothing is eternal, but only God is eternal in all His love and faithfulness. From the beginning He created and organized the universe, from nothingness to existence, disorder to order, the arrangement and creation continues forever. So give thanks for His goodness and His works always. We may encounter various struggles and difficulties in life, but the remembrance of God's steadfast love enables and strengthens us to face them.
