When Power Takes Away Living Space

For many people, “living space” is not just a piece of land or a place to live. It is a place where people weave lives, build traditions, store memories, and hope for the future. But these days, living space is increasingly being taken away in the name of development and economic growth. We see recurring agrarian conflicts: customary lands are evicted, forests are converted into large-scale monoculture plantations, coastal areas are polluted by industrial waste, and massive deforestation in areas such as Kalimantan and Papua. As a result, indigenous peoples are alienated on their own land, losing their source of life and identity, while wildlife is slowly losing their habitat to survive. This phenomenon of deprivation of living space is not something new. Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah recorded a similar pattern of power through the description of the King of Babylon in Isaiah 14. The text takes the form of a masyal, a song of satire against a ruler drunk with power. Although called the "King of Babylon," this figure is understood by many scholars to symbolise the ruler of an ancient empire who built his glory by plundering the lives of other nations.

The Babylonian Empire maintained its dominance through mass migration. Conquered nations were forcibly moved far from their homelands to serve as slave labourers in the imperial centre. In other words, Babylon not only conquered people, but also stole their living space (land, identity and history). Nature was also exploited for the sake of the splendour of power. Isaiah mentions the cypress trees and cedars of Lebanon that rejoiced when the oppressor fell (v. 8). These trees symbolise how ancient forests were cleared to build palaces and giant projects for kings. Nature is sacrificed for the sake of ego and the glorification of power. Therefore, Isaiah presents a very sharp social criticism. He describes the ruler as "a mace that strikes without ceasing" (vv. 5-6), a symbol of power that is never satisfied expanding its territory by trampling on other people's living space. But the greatest irony comes when the king finally descends to the world of the dead. On earth he lived in splendour, but in Sheol he was only covered in worms and maggots (v. 11). A privilege that he had usurped on earth finally vanished in the presence of death. "All the earth is safe and sound," even the cedars cheered because they were no longer cut down by the oppressor. Here we see that human suffering and the destruction of nature are actually intertwined: when power becomes greedy, humans suffer and the earth is injured. But when tyranny is stopped, both regain the space to breathe.

Friends of the Bible, today's devotional invites us to listen again to the cries that are often ignored: the cries of people who have lost their land, and the cries of the earth wounded by greed. Isaiah reminds us that God never favours powers that take away the living space of His creation. He is a God of restoration, who returns people to their homes and brings peace back to the earth. Therefore, faith is not only about saving human souls, but also about caring for the world that God has entrusted as a common home for all creation.
