History Written by Winners?

In recent years, the world has been repeatedly shocked by newly publicised historical documents. There are war archives, political records, and victims' testimonies that do not fully align with the official narrative that has been believed. Many things that were once considered as "historical truths" are slowly being questioned. Therefore, the famous saying "history is written by the victors" no longer sounds completely absolute. As it turns out, the victors may be able to control the story for a while, but they are not always able to control the truth forever.

In Isaiah 14:24-32, we see great nations like Assyria, Babylon, and Philistia that once appeared as the rulers of history. They seemed so powerful, determined the political direction of the world, and even felt that the future of other nations was in their hands. Assyria once destroyed Northern Israel and spread fear through its military power. Babylon then emerged as a symbol of the glory and arrogance of an empire that felt itself the centre of the world. Philistia, Israel's old enemy, seemed to rejoice when they saw the political changes that they thought were in their favour. But in the midst of it all Isaiah makes the startling revelation that these great empires are not really in control of history.

Therefore God says, "As I have planned, so shall it be done". This sentence is at the centre of the entire passage. It is as if Isaiah wants to show that in the end, history is not driven by the ambitions of kings, military might, or the propaganda of rulers. Great nations may be able to write their own victory inscriptions, build monuments of glory, or control the political narrative of their times. But time moves on, and in the end, history has shown time and time again that no empire is truly immortal.

Isn't this pattern still evident today? The world today is still full of people and systems that want to dominate the narrative. Media, power, popularity, even digital algorithms often determine who is heard and who is forgotten. There is a side that always seems to win, dominant, and seems to be able to determine the “truth” for many people. But all of this reminds us that there are limits to human power.

Friends of the Bible, we live in a time when narratives about history, people, and the past are constantly being debated and reshaped. There is so much information, opinions, and interests vying for space in the media and the digital world, that sometimes people are more busy maintaining an image than seeking the truth itself. In situations like this, God's word invites us to keep a clear and humble heart. For before God, what matters most is not who has made the biggest name in human history, but who continues to live in truth, justice, and love.
