A toddler who had only just learnt to walk suddenly fell after tripping over a stone. Immediately, the people around him encouraged the toddler to get up straight away and start walking again. Naturally, that is how it should be. When someone stumbles and falls, they should immediately get up and dust themselves off. The same should happen when we fall into sin. We should get up straight away and repent. Yet why is it that there are always people who refuse to get up and renew themselves? 

That is what God said to the people of Judah. They continued to plunge themselves into things that were not pleasing to God. Like someone who keeps walking towards a precipice, despite having been warned many times. The birds of the air know when to migrate according to the seasons set by God, yet human beings, who have been given reason and the Word, ignore His will. 

It seems that God’s people at that time were deceived by the false comfort offered by a handful of people (v. 11). They claimed that everything was fine, when in fact this was not in accordance with God’s will. His Word was twisted into error. Until, in the end, the nation lost its vigilance and sense of shame regarding sin. 

Dear Friends of the Bible, perhaps at some point in our lives, there was a time when we fell into sin so deeply. If that is the case, listen to God’s call to return to Him. Do not turn away or make excuses, for that is what causes us to fall deeper and makes it increasingly difficult to rise again. Heed His call and return to the path that God has set out. Wash yourselves quickly in His love, which sustains and strengthens us.
