Kirbat is a liquid (beverage) container made from animal skins. To function optimally, kirbat must maintain its flexibility and durability. A kirbat that has become dry and stiff cannot be used to hold liquids and will even become very fragile. This is how the psalmist describes his condition, which is as fragile as smoked kirbat.
The reality of human fragility captured by the psalmist in this reading comes from the challenges and struggles of living out God's Torah at all times. He sees people around him plotting evil against him. They were people who did not fear God at all, and ignored His law. Threat after threat stood in his way. His life became very tense.
Despite this, the psalmist did not want to be like those who threatened him. He chose to remain dependent on God and His decrees. In the midst of his vulnerability, the psalmist felt the need for God even more. God's word guided him and gave him strength.
Friends of the Bible, if you think about it more deeply, isn't our existence as humans always colored by fragility? Illness, struggles in life, unexpected events, even death can shake all the certainties we try to build in life. Unfortunately, we are often tempted to look for a foothold in things outside of God, be it money and power that become sources of false certainty that are as fragile as life itself. So, find the true foundation for our lives in his word and decrees.
