The experience with God is a mystery. On the one hand we feel and know that He is close, but on the other hand He is a figure that is unreachable by our limitations as humans. That is the experience of relationship with Him, a figure who is alive and always wants to reach out to His people. It is in this realization that we are expected to always connect with Him, the Author of Life.
It is this experience of relationship with God that has fascinated the faithful throughout the ages, including in our reading today. In the first half of our reading, the psalmist expresses his awareness of the God who knows him so well. Sitting or standing, walking or lying down, God knows all our actions. He doesn't just know, but delves deeply into our being. It is as if there is no distance between the Creator and His creation.
God is the Protector of His people, as expressed by the psalmist in verse 5, "From behind and from before You encircle me, and You put Your hand upon me." A reminder and sign of God's protection. He knows everything that happens in our lives. As such, the future and all its mysteries do not escape God's watchful eye. In this universe of His creation, there is not a single place that is hidden from Him.
Today we are reminded to reflect and savor our personal experience with Him. All the busyness and demands of this modern age often do not give us time to truly contemplate His existence. Time has taken us hostage from what is truly important, which is building and living a relationship with Him. Let us live with the awareness and need to constantly reflect on our life experiences through the lens of our relationship with Him.
