Understanding and believing that God is the All-Good, does not let go of another fact of God's identity, namely His justice that also rules the universe. So behind all the mercy of God, sometimes God's firmness also appears, even it seems like "punishment" from Him. Yet all of this is done in the context of His justice and the process of educating His people.
They exemplified a dynamic relationship with God based on the covenant established with the patriarchs of Israel. Israel was invited to be fruitful in the Lord, to be an example and blessing to other nations. However, they often relied on their own thinking, forgot about God, and instead asked for help from other nations who were considered capable of releasing Israel from the crisis. As a result, God Himself intervened. The reference to Leviathan and other giant water animals in verse 1 is a metaphor for the great nations around Judah who experienced God's judgement. They were experiencing God's chastening.
Israel also did not escape God's chastening. When they lived in a close and intimate relationship with God, God's people became like a vibrant vineyard, abundant and sweet in fruit. Israel became an example and a blessing to other nations. However, when Israel drifted away from God, the Lord did not hesitate to bring His chastisement. However, the chastening was not to destroy Israel but to mature them in faith. Therefore, God will eventually reunite the scattered Israelites.
So let us wholeheartedly nurture and strengthen our commitment to always maintain a relationship with God. Let us rely solely on Him throughout our life’s journey, rather than on our own strength or that of others. See how this loving God is always willing to be present and to guide His children. Live in a true appreciation of His love and guidance. Walk through this life in His wisdom.
